Uifa’atali congratulates Alissa Pili for #8 WNBA Draft

Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is congratulating Alissa Pili upon being drafted in the top ten picks to play professional basketball in the WNBA.

The former Utah women’s basketball star is heading to Minnesota after the Lynx took her No. 8 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Pili really turned heads as a prospect after posting up 37 points on the eventual National Champion South Carolina Gamecocks early in the year. Her performance was so strong that head coach Dawn Staley noted during a break in the game that they “could not stop her”.

The Congresswoman said, “Congratulations to Alissa Pili of the Utah Utes! She was drafted 8th overall in the WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx.

“Alissa is of Samoan heritage, and represented our culture beautifully at the draft with a Samoan pattern in her lovely dress! She has earned a host of accolades in her college career, including PAC-12 Player of the Year and WCBA Coaches All-American honors. Congratulations to her, and everyone cheering for her from Anchorage, Alaska, all over the Pacific region, Utah, and more.”

In an interview during the WNBA draft Monday night, Alissa highlighted her Samoan heritage.
